Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
