Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
